Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)

As an Afghan born artist, Zuhal Feraidon explores Afghan women's existence as challenging, enduring, and often physically unseen or hidden. Through creative technique, use of traditional Islamic art patterns, and a reimagining of female identity, Zuhal’s large paintings and small works on paper explore this concealed existence and overlooked daily struggles of women living under conditions of war and political control.

About the Artist (provided by the artist)

Zuhal Feraidon is an Afghan born artist and is a current Aunspaugh Fifth Year Fellow at the University of Virginia. She received her BA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting from U.Va. She traveled back to Afghanistan, as part of an independent study to research female identity through painting, photography, installation, and textile art. This research led to a developing portfolio in which the artist uses the self and her own experiences as a means of representation of people who are underrepresented in art.
