About the Artist

Tobiah Mundt is a self-taught fiber artist who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She studied Architecture at Howard University in Washington, DC and eventually left the field of Architecture for sculpture.  She uses needle felting, wet felting, and rug tufting techniques to create figurative pieces that illustrate and invoke emotion.

She is the Co-Owner and Creative Director of The Hive, an arts and crafts bar in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she teaches fiber arts–blurring the line between art and craft. Tobiah has exhibited her work in Texas, Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Tobiah's work is produced using a slow meditative process called needle felting. During this process, raw wool is poked thousands of times with a barbed needle to compact and sculpt the wool. She transfers empathy and personal emotion into the sculpted fiber to produce moments of a narrative that function as tools to process and unburden experience.

During her Fellowship in June 2021, Tobiah will create an installation that follows the flow of breath, illustrating the impact of breath held and breath stolen by overt and subtle racism and highlighting a culture that finds and creates joy despite the struggle.

About the Fellowship

The New City Arts Fellowship at Welcome Gallery supports six Charlottesville-area artists from January-June 2021 working on projects related to the theme Next Breath: History, Hate, Possibility, written by Maurice Wallace. During their fellowship, artists are working to address the ongoing impacts of systemic racism and the COVID-19 pandemic through creative projects that deeply and imaginatively relate to breath as the essence of life and freedom. Each artist receives one month in 2021 to transform Welcome Gallery into their studio space, a $400 honorarium, a stocked pantry with their favorite snacks, and an opportunity to engage the community with their work at the conclusion of their fellowship.

To learn more about these artists and their fellowship projects, visit our website. Opportunities to engage with their work are ongoing from January-June 2021.
