Exhibition Statement (provided by the artists)

Adrian Wood’s and Nina Thomas's work deals with the interaction of people, personalities, and narratives that emerge through repetitive processes of mark-making. Adrian and Nina work independently, engaging and manipulating processes in traditional media — drawing, painting, printmaking and paper-based collage. The marks in Nina’s images build up around squirming bodies in shimmering cacophony. Figures are joined together in images that depict multiple moments converging. Intimate connections between figures are caricatured by repetitive processes of mark-making and layering so that lines converge into claustrophobic distortions of relationships. In contrast, Adrian's images distill single moments of transition or repose with simple lines to delineate figures in space. Negotiating between obstruction and attachment, the figures engage their surroundings in images that explore relationships between figure and ground, people and place. In both Nina’s and Adrian's work, individual figures push against and into their surrounding spaces. The images are corrected, painted over, drawn on top of and layered with memory. Each piece is a complete part that stands alone and responds to the whole body of work.
