Charlottesville SOUP: Spring 2018

SOUP is a seasonal public dinner series to support creative projects right here in Charlottesville. At each SOUP, attendees give a $10 donation and in return they receive soup, salad, bread, dessert — and a vote.
During the meal, community members make short presentations about their creative projects in need of funding. Attendees participate in a dialogue about the proposals over a nourishing meal in handmade bowls by local artists from City Clay.
At the end of the meal, each attendee enters a voting booth to cast his or her vote for which project to fund with the money raised from the meal that night. We’ll award the grant right then and there. Consider SOUP an experiment in civic engagement and a chance to play a role in supporting creativity in our community.

Special Matching Grant
Our community partner Ting Charlottesville is offering a $1,000 matching grant at this June's SOUP.
Each donation made towards the artist grant will be matched 1:1 (up to $1,000), meaning that, with ticket proceeds, the grant could reach $3,500 to fund a Charlottesville artist project.
June 2018 Artist Presenters
Wesley Diener and Rachel Mink are vocalists planning a staged production of “Autumn Valentine,” a song cycle for soprano and baritone with music by Ricky Ian Gordon and poetry by Dorothy Parker, which explores topics of commitment, intimacy, and loyalty.
Tobiah Mundt and Kimberly Anderson are artists who are inviting the Charlottesville community to participate in a large-scale collaborative weaving project that will create a vibrant tapestry representative of the people of Charlottesville.
Elizabeth Brightbill and Andrew Gabbert make up Terra Voce, a flute and cello duo recording an album featuring South American choro and tango, pieces inspired by Portuguese fado, Brazilian jazz, and Basque and Galician traditional folk music.
Laura Lee Gulledge is an author and illustrator currently penciling, inking, shading, and lettering her upcoming YA graphic novel about Mona Starr, a modern teenager struggling with depression and loneliness whose personal research project leads to friendship, expression, and healing.
Spring 2018 Grantee
New City Arts Initiative awarded Charlottesville graphic novelist Laura Lee Gulledgea $3,148 grant to pencil, ink, shade, and letter her upcoming YA graphic novel about Mona Starr, a modern teenager struggling with depression and loneliness whose personal research project leads to friendship, expression, and healing.
