joy tirade holds an MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a BA from the University of Virginia, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Her practice operates at the nexus of experimental video, abstract painting, intermedia, and light installation. In her work and her research, she creates connections between phenomenology and technology to explore aspects and qualities of human emotion, such as love and longing.
She has exhibited internationally in British Columbia, Norway, Lithuania, and South Korea. In the US, she’s shared work at The Mint Museum, The Ackland Museum, CAM, Masur Museum, the Carrack, The Garage, LUMP, Fluorescent Gallery, Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, Red Ink Studios, and LACDA.
joy tirade lives and works in Oakland, California, where she teaches art and facilitates a community painting club/artist collective via zoom @community.painting.collective
She is also actively creating a jungle in her apartment made entirely of houseplants and crystals.
