Irène Mathieu

Irène P. Mathieu, MD, MPH (she/her/hers) is a healer and artist – an academic pediatrician, writer, educator, and public health researcher. She is the award-winning author of four poetry collections – milk tongue (Deep Vellum Press, 2023), Grand Marronage (Switchback Books, 2019), orogeny (Trembling Pillow Press, 2017), and the galaxy of origins (dancing girl press, 2014).
Irène is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, where she practices and teaches outpatient pediatrics and runs community-engaged research projects as the founder and principal investigator of the Wellness And Youth Social action (WAYS) Lab. She also serves as Associate Director of Programs in Health Humanities in the School of Medicine. Her writing and advocacy work have been featured in the Washington Post, LA Times, Richmond Magazine, NPR, and more. Irène is a speaker with Centivox and is represented by Patricia Nelson of Looking Glass Literary & Media. She lives with her family in Charlottesville, Virginia.
