Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)
Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist exploring themes of identity, race, class, and history through two-dimensional, sculptural, and digital time-based collage works. He uses the familiar — popular culture and advertising — to help the viewer decode the connections and start the conversations that are often avoided.
Our New City Arts First Friday exhibit opening, open hours, and Human/Ties hours are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available during Charlottesville's First Friday Art Walk and Human/Ties. “I Am A Man” is co-presented by the Black Professional Network of Charlottesville.
Any Welcome Gallery visitors to this exhibit will receive this free Tattly tattoo, designed by Hank Willis Thomas.
