Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)
Cate West Zahl first studied art under Lee Newman at the Holton-Arms school, and then went on to earn her BA in studio art from Hamilton College. While her academic work was based in the standards of a perceptual fine arts tradition, she is exploring making abstract works.
In addition to these works, abstract cigar box paintings by her father, Tom West, will be on display. Tom studied art and architecture at Princeton University and worked closely with American abstract expressionist Sean Scully. Since he graduated in 1979, he has continued to make art in his studio basement in Washginton D.C. After a season producing very large works on paper, for the past two years, he moved to painting on cigar boxes.
