Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)
Christen Yates‘ work attempts to create moments of hospitality between the viewer and surrounding landscapes through layers of loose suggestive strokes. Graduate studies in theology, art, and sustainable development gave her training in painting, but also a sensitivity toward our tenuous relationship with the agrarian world. These new works in oil, gold and silver leaf draw partly from ancient iconography as well as impressionist painters to offer the viewer a meditative experience of the surrounding Blue Ridge landscape and livestock.
