On Tuesday, November 28 from 4:30-6:30PM, Matt Shelton invites you to join him in the installation of paper pulp wall drawings for his December Welcome Gallery exhibition, repair is the dream of the broken thing.
Since 2014, Matt has used paper pulped from a collection of Civil War Times Illustrated magazines he inherited from his paternal grandfather as a primary drawing and sculptural medium. At this free, public event, community members are invited to join Matt in shredding and pulping these magazines, and in installing the wall drawings (see photo). You are also welcome to bring paper artifacts of your own to contribute to the pulp.
In this process, Matt asks: What does it mean to want to get rid of something you’ve inherited? In what ways does this question animate anxieties about bequests, “honoring” and/or “betraying” the Past/ancestors, and about our personal and collective narratives about memorial and forgetting?
An RSVP is not required, but we would love to know if you’re coming so that we have a sense of how many participants there will be. Planning on being there? Questions? Let us know!
