Join us on Saturday, October 18 from 10-11:30AM for a presentation and conversation with Elena Yu (October exhibiting artist) and Judy Jacob (retired National Park Service Senior Conservator) on gravestones, lichens, microorganisms, and the complexities of cemetery preservation.
No registration is required for this free, drop-in event at Welcome Gallery (114 3rd St. NE). Coffee and light snacks provided.
Judy Jacob is a recently retired Senior Conservator with the National Park Service in New York City. Over the course of 39 years, she focused on stone and masonry monuments and buildings; she now continues her work on a long-term research project studying relationships between lichens, biofilms, and stone.
Elena Yu is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice aims to examine and affect the formation of collective memory through engagement with the materials and processes of archives. Her work incorporates textiles, found objects, drawing, performance, and social practice, and is deeply informed by her experiences as an arts organizer and educator. Learn more here about Elena and her exhibition, Perpetual Care, on view at Welcome Gallery through October 29, 2025.
