Fellowship Open Studio with Eileen Johnson

Meet January 2023 New City Arts Fellow, Eileen Johnson, and see what she’s been working on in the studio at Visible Records on January 28 from 2-4PM. Eileen will be in the studio to show you her collage work and answer questions. While you’re visiting, you’ll have an opportunity to make your own collage. No advance registration is required. Stop by, say hello, and enjoy an Albemarle Baking Co. treat!

To get to the studio: Visible Records is located at 1740 Broadway Street. Parking is available. After you walk through the Visible Records door, take the set of stairs to the right. Eileen’s studio is the first one on the right at the top of the stairs. If you have accessibility needs and cannot navigate stairs, please email us. We would be happy to ensure there is a way to meet Eileen and see her work.

Eileen Johnson (she/her) is a visual artist who uses an intuitive collage process to translate her conscious and subconscious thoughts into physical representations. Her artistic practice, sprung from the days of the early pandemic, tracks her journey towards personal liberation and self-acceptance, amidst the isolation, rejection, and uncertainty of the past few years. She makes use of eye-catching juxtapositions to challenge how we see things and to help us imagine a more just and loving world.

During her Fellowship, Eileen is using collage to reclaim soft spots as liberatory within a world that seeks control through hardening. She is exploring the shame, difficulty, and beauty in returning to soft spots.

The New City Arts Fellowship creates space, time, and financial support for Charlottesville-area artists to make work in response to an annual open call and proposal theme.Selected. Artist Fellows are given studio space and a stipend to make work, with a requirement to use the studio space for at least 5-10 hours per week during their month-long fellowship. In 2023, this Fellowship will be held in partnership with Visible Records and conclude in a group show at Welcome Gallery in Summer 2023.

COVID-19 Visitor Policy: Masks are optional at this open studio. Please do not attend if you have been exposed to COVID-19, are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or have been advised to isolate or quarantine.
