Mom in Exhibition + Shared Space

Need a nap? Do you need to have a conversation with another adult? Do you need a space to work out of your home? Do you need to have a nap or scroll on your phone in peace?

Alma Molina is inviting Charlottesville-area moms to join her at Welcome Gallery during her fellowship. On Tuesdays and Fridays from 9AM-12PM in May, moms can stop by the gallery (no RSVP required) to rest, spend time talking to another grown-up, and see what Alma is working on. Need to bring your kids? They’re welcome, too. While you’re here, you’re invited to watch Alma’s Astronaut Mom Project, have a cup of coffee, and watch an artist mom working live!

MEET THE ARTIST

Alma RayĂ©n Molina Carvajal (she/her) is an art mediator and cultural manager and the mother of Nahuel and Freya. Alma arrived in Charlottesville from Chile in early September 2021. With formal studies in Art Theory, Art History and Education, and a self-taught person, Alma has studied and developed art mediation practices that link artist, artworks, and cultural institution with communities and people.

Over the last few years, Alma has started to work in visual art pieces, boosted by feminist artists and feminist spaces, developing a “right here, right now” aesthetic. Using a non-academic language, she documents the routines and daily everyday life using the tools that has in hand: cell phone pictures, videos and audio recordings, scribbles and quick notes over notebooks, improv dances, and small performances. In the end, mixed up in digital collages and videos, edited in the same non-expert way.

During her fellowship in May 2022, Alma will conduct visual research about maternity by opening the gallery space to local Charlottesville mothers to support their needs (taking a nap, having a meeting, etc.).

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

The New City Arts Fellowship creates space, time, and financial support for Charlottesville-area artists to make work at Welcome Gallery in response to an annual open call and proposal theme. Each artist receives a month-long studio space grant, a stipend, and a stocked pantry with their favorite drinks and snacks. Selected artists are expected to use the gallery for at least 5-10 hours per week during the 1 month that they are given a fellowship. Work is on view at the conclusion of each month-long fellowship. Learn more here

This program is supported by an Enriching Communities grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation and Maurice Wallace and Pam Sutton-Wallace
