Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz: Resident Artist Talk & Open Studios

You’re invited to an open studio presentation and artist lecture by New City Artist in Residence, Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz, that will survey Alyssa’s practice, influences and recent research conducted in the ancient holy city of Varanasi in India.

A photograph of the Welcome Gallery featuring large, brightly-colored hanging textile works by Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz.

Since 2010, Alyssa’s work has evolved in response to her extensive travels and growing interest in what it means to be contemplative in today’s world. Working between drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and textile design, she is deeply interested in the contemplative dimension of craft, a subject that has become the focus of her independent research into traditional textile practices. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including solo and group exhibitions in India, Pakistan, the UAE and Europe. Her trip to Varanasi was funded by a generous grant from the Lighton International Artist Exchange Program.

This event will be held at Welcome Gallery on January 28, 2016, from 5:30-7:00 PM and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
