Hearing Grace in Modern Art with Dan Siedell

The Mockingbird Fall Conference will be held in Charlottesville, VA this fall at Christ Episcopal Church. As a part of their conference lineup of speakers, Dan Siedell will be talking on “Hearing The Scream: Edvard Munch, Modern Art, and Grace.”

In a preview of this upcoming talk, Siedell explains: “Since its inception, modern art has had to fight against the theologians of aesthetic glory: the art critics, dealers, and collectors who desperately wanted to make these strange paintings into instruments of cultural justification. Munch’s paintings suggest that modern art is something else, something that its defenders, promoters, collectors, and interpreters have overlooked because they haven’t listened.”

Siedell's talk will be held at Christ Church (120 West High St) on Friday, September 28 at 2:30 PM. If you register with New City Arts by 5 PM on Tuesday, September 25, Mockingbird is offering a $10 ticket for just this session for these advanced registrants.

Daniel A. Siedell is Director of Theological and Cultural Practice at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Before joining the staff at Coral Ridge he enjoyed a fifteen-year career as an art museum curator and art history professor, working with such contemporary artists as Enrique Martínez Celaya, Robyn O’Neil, David Bates, and Chris Ware, among many others. His work argues for the importance of Christian theology for art and culture. He is also the author of the God in the Gallery: A Christian Embrace of Modern Art (Baker Academic 2008) and is at work with Fuller Seminary theologian Willian Dyrness on a study of the impact of Christianity on the development of modern art with InterVarsity Press. Siedell is the New City Arts Scholar-in-Residence for 2012-2013.
