Charlottesville Emergency Relief Fund for Artists

Inspired by Springboard for the Arts in Minneapolis, New City Arts and The Bridge launched an Emergency Relief Fund for Charlottesville-area artists, seed funded by The FUNd at CACF and program support from each organization in March 2020.

In the COVID-19 pandemic, artists as independent workers and creative people engaged in travel and exchange may be especially affected. This Fund provided Charlottesville-area artists with an up-to $300 emergency grant to replace lost income due to the cancellation of specific, scheduled gigs or opportunities (commissions, performances, contracts, other jobs/loss of income) due to COVID-19.

2022 Emergency Relief Funds for Artists

We received a generous contribution from Jeff Sweatman that allows us to provide new $300 grants to artists who lost income in 2022 as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These grants will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will close once the grants have been allocated. Past Relief Fund recipients may apply.

Loss of income in 2022 might look like:

  • You were exposed or tested positive for COVID and did not have paid leave from your job.

  • A family member had Covid and you took unpaid time off to care for them.

  • You had to cancel a gig or an entire tour because of a Covid exposure or Covid-related illness.

Many thanks to Jeff Sweatman who collaborated with area musicians to make the John Prine Tribute Album and donated proceeds to directly support other local artists through the Charlottesville Emergency Relief Fund for Artists.

Meet Charlottesville Emergency Relief Fund for Artist Recipients

In 2020, shortly after the Emergency Fund was announced, community members provided more financial support, and The Front Porch donated their proceeds from an online concert. Local photographer, Sam Abell, hosted an online workshop and donated all of the proceeds to the Emergency Relief Fund.

Kristen Finn, Ézé Amos, Tom Daly, Sarah Cramer Shields, and John Robinson donated 50% of their Cville Porchraits Project proceeds to the Emergency Relief Fund. In 4 months, they photographed more than 1,000 neighbors and raised a total of $27,000 to re-distribute to artists. 🎉
