About the Research Residency
In celebration of all the ways research informs creative practices—the questioning, experimenting, archiving, and observing that leads artists to new discoveries and ways of knowing—the New City Arts Research Residency invites creatives of all disciplines (i.e., writers, curators, art historians, theorists, designers, filmmakers, etc.) to apply with proposals rooted in research. Within this context, ‘research’ is defined broadly and while we encourage academics to apply, this residency is not limited to projects of academic research.
Artists should apply with a specific art-based research project that would benefit from these local resources. Each resident artist is expected to share their research with the public at the end of their residency.
Selected artists receive:
24-hour, free access to our studio (located adjacent to Welcome Gallery and our New City Arts office)
a $1,000 stipend
support for a culminating event or series of events in which the artist shares their work publicly.
This residency is self-directed and research-based, as our studio space is not suited to a practice involving large-scale artworks. Artists will have the option to regularly interact with gallery visitors, staff, and other artists should they want to take a more public, active role, but are not required to do so.
About the Studio Space
Each artist works in a free studio (approximately 9'x16'6") with a pocket door for privacy, wall space for displaying works in progress, a small cabinet and shelving, an adjustable standing desk, high-speed fiber internet provided by Ting, a multi-function printer, and a shared kitchen and bathroom. You also get to share the space with a beautiful Fiddle Leaf Fig named Delilah. 🪴
Please note that the studio space does not have a working window and is in a public space. For this reason, we do not recommend this residency for artists working with materials that produce fumes requiring a well-ventilated space. Artists should refrain from using any colvents or other hazardous materials in the studio space during their residency.

What are the Residency requirements?
Before you apply, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with New City Arts’ mission and Content Guidelines. Given that the core of our mission is to foster engagement with the arts in Charlottesville, Virginia, we ask that resident artists:spend a minimum of 15 hours a week in the studio;
share their work publicly at the end of their residency.
Do I need to spend the stipend in a specific way?
Resident artists are not expected to use the $1,000 stipend in any specific way. This funding is meant to support you and your practice in whatever way is most helpful. -
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the New City Arts Research Residency, you must…
live in the Charlottesville area (including the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and Orange counties) during the residency program.
Be at least 18 years of age.
not be an alumni of the New City Arts Residency program.
be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by the start date of the Residency period.*

How do I apply?
Applications are due July 29, 2025 at 11:59PM.Applicants must fill out the Residency Application online via Google Forms where they will submit 2-3 artwork samples. Specific details and guidelines are available in the application.
Is there assistance available?

Applications are first evaluated to ensure that:Eligibility criteria has been met,
and that the application has been fully completed.
Residency proposals are then reviewed by a selection committee. Committee members change with each application period, but include past Resident Artists, board members, and community members such as artists, curators, and other professionals from community organizations.
Four artists will be chosen by the committee to be invited to interview with New City Arts staff before a final selection of 2 artists for the Fall and Spring residency periods.

What have past resident artists done?
You can read more about past residency projects here (scroll to the bottom)!Past residencies have culminated in a Public Reading, a Symposium, Poem-Tour & Downtown Tree Walks, and a Curator Talk with Guided Game Playthroughs alongside exhibitions. The structure of this event, or series of events, is left to the discretion of each resident artist and should best support the public’s engagement with the work made during each residency. Artists will have an opportunity to share more about their ideas in the application. A more detailed outline of the support we’re able to provide can be found in the FAQ section of this page.
Will I have a residency exhibition?
We are not able to offer resident artists an exhibition in our upcoming gallery season. However, artists are required to share their work with the public at the end of their residency. Potential culminating event formats to present your project publicly include but are not limited to:

Our downtown Welcome Gallery space can host a small group of approximately 40 people seated, 60 people standing. We have 40 chairs and four, 6-ft tables available for artist use. More information about what else is available in our gallery space can be found here.
With advanced notice and in collaboration with the resident artist, we can apply for additional funding and in-kind partnership to host a larger, off-site event. If you believe your culminating event might require additional funding, be sure to include a note about that in your application.
What do you mean by “research”? Do I have to be an academic researcher to apply?
While academics may apply, you do not need to be an academic researcher to be eligible. We see research as an integral part of many artists’ creative practices. This residency is intended to support artists looking to delve deep into ideas and experiment with new processes in ways that benefit their practice.Where can I park?
There is free, 2-hour street parking near the gallery. You can also park in either the Market Street or Water Street parking garages which have a $12 daily maximum.
