Fred Missel is the Director of Design and Development for the University of Virginia Foundation. He joined the Foundation in November of 2000 and oversees the management of the Foundation’s development projects, including the UVA Research Parks, Boar’s Head and Birdwood, projects adjacent to the UVA Health System precinct, all property rezonings and entitlements, and master planning efforts.

He continues to oversee the development of office buildings, athletic complexes, hospitality and resort facilities, and a variety of sponsored projects, laboratories, and research spaces in addition to numerous others.

Fred’s experience prior to arrival at the Foundation includes ten years of private sector civil engineering, landscape architecture and planning work across the mid-Atlantic region. He serves as an adjunct faculty member at the UVA School of Architecture and currently teaches land development planning and sustainable land development at the University of Virginia. Fred is the past Chair of the Albemarle County Architectural Review Board and currently serves as an Albemarle County Planning Commissioner. Fred also serves on various other boards focused primarily on ensuring safe and affordable housing in the region.

Fred has an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Social Work from Albright College and holds a Masters in Landscape Architecture and a Masters of Planning from the University Of Virginia School of Architecture.
