Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)
Phuong’s experiences as an immigrant are traumatic; the scope of which she did not fully grasp until recent years. Oftentimes, she feels stuck between Vietnamese and American cultures, with two different sets of identities and expectations. Her small, abstract works grow out of fragmented memories and emotions that she carries inside. They are the artifacts of her attempts to reconcile her conflicting personal cultural identities. Abstraction is a tool to process Phuong’s memories and traumas — a formal construct upon which she restructures her stories. It is an act of obscuring the painful details, distilling the most beautiful aspects, and transforming them into tangible objects.
