In the Homeland We've Never Seen is Murad Khan Mumtaz's first solo exhibition in Charlottesville. Comprised of paintings on paper and hand-colored multi-plate etchings, the three bodies of work assembled in the exhibition explore the theme of sacred landscape imagined from a variety of vantage points. Deeply rooted in the visual traditions, methods and material intelligence of North Indian painting, Mumtaz’s landscapes refer to a nostalgic, pre-colonial past that haunts his understanding of the present.
About the Artist (provided by the artist)
Murad Khan Mumtaz is a Pakistani-American artist trained in the traditional practices of North Indian painting, which he exhibits, researches and teaches internationally. He is also a scholar who examines historical intersections of art, literature and religious expression in South Asia.
A native of Lahore, Mumtaz was educated at Pakistan’s National College of Arts, Columbia University, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar, and the University of Virginia, where he recently completed his doctoral dissertation. His artwork has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the US, Pakistan and Europe. His scholarly work has been supported by fellowships from the Smithsonian’s Freer-Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the American Institute of Pakistan Studies and the CLIR-Mellon Program for dissertation research in original sources. He will be joining the art history faculty of Williams College this fall.
