Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)

Michael Heivly is a Charlottesville-based artist whose exhibit title “Landscape as myth” refers to both the reality and illusion of the historic use of the earth to make and show nature and its constantly changing place in our lives. These works — mostly from the late 1970s and early 1980s — utilize soil from the earth to make the paint, as opposed to using paint to create the illusion of the landscape.
