Exhibition Statement (provided by the artists)

Josef Beery is a Charlottesville publications designer and printmaker. He is cofounder of the Virginia Arts of the Book Center, a program of the Virginia Foundation of the Humanities and a Trustee of the American Printing History Association, an international organization promoting the study of the history of printing. He has been a Fellow at Brown Residential College at the University of Virginia for over ten years and teaches book arts and the history of the book to students from Sweet Briar College through a program of their literary magazine, Red Clay. He is a guest artist at U.Va.’s Rare Book School demonstrating early printing and typographic technologies. He is a founding member of the graphic artists’ cooperative, Ten Flavors Studios, which has operated in Charlottesville since the early 1980s.

Artist Kaki Dimock explores how the animal and human world co-exist in other-worldy habitats. She reveals the complexity beneath the surface of an ocean, land, animal, or house by drawing fragile boundaries between evident and obscured spaces and places. Illustrating moments of surprise alongside seemingly compulsive repetition, Dimock’s work exposes the hidden, vast interiors of oceans, elephants, countrysides, and snakes.

Kaki and Josef have been meeting weekly to make artwork for one year. These drawing sessions allowed the artists time to explore new artistic disciplines and provide feedback about one another’s work. Together, they share a love for the natural world and a whimsical approach to art-making. Having both spent meaningful parts of their lives in Maine, Kaki and Josef’s first dual exhibit, “Deepsea Collaborations,” features irresistible, impossible, beautiful, and strange sea creatures like jellyfish and blue lobsters.

Prints, watercolor paintings, and drawings will be on exhibit at Welcome Gallery.
