Exhibition Statement (provided by the artists)
Yearnings presents two distinct practices that share the yearning for a simpler life that is beautiful but fleeting. Jeanette Cohen is an expressionist landscape painter where a barn or house sits on the horizon below an ever-expanding sky to ground and shelter us. Her loaded brush of creamy pinks, oranges, greens and blues suggest time of day, season, and weather. In her new series of photographs, Stacey Evans represents home more directly in which she focuses on objects that are man-made and ones that grow in the ground. Interiors and exteriors of home and the realm outside exist simultaneously and reflect an earlier time when life was simpler. Like Cohen, stylistically, Evans work insists that her color photographs are not purely representational.
Independent curator, Leslie Ava Shaw, is a recent transplant from New York City. She is interested in presenting extraordinary work by local, regional, and international artists in Charlottesville and its surroundings.
