Exhibition Statement (provided by the artist)
Schoyer’s works on paper are guided by Alexander Von Humboldt and Napoleon Bonaparte, among others, as they traveled across Oceania, the Americas, and Antarctica in the 18th and 19th centuries. These explorers and naturalists questioned the mysteries of the world in spite of the perils and comedy of errors that characterized their journeys. Her works are imaginary renderings of the experiences and specimens recounted in their journals. United in their common curiosity about the natural world, Schoyer considers them to be her collaborators.
