Chloe Clayborne | Decadent Dissolution

From November 7-22, 2025, New City Arts, supported by UVA Arts & the Office of the Provost & the Vice Provost for the Arts, presents Decadent Dissolution, a solo exhibition by Chloe Clayborne.

This partnership exhibition provides a UVA Studio Art student with an opportunity to present their work and further their professional practice in the Charlottesville community. Selected students or Fellows are provided with support for an exhibition and connection with a local artist mentor

Decadent Dissolution features a body of work which pursues a deeper understanding of self and consciousness. The term “decadent” generates a point of inquiry towards the manner in which this body of work surrenders to the sensuality of being and remembering. The idea of dissolution furthers this inquiry through looking at the physical body as an extraordinary yet fated composite: a gut that ruminates, joints that remember past activity, and all the parts that rely not only on each other, but also on external factors and forces. Reflection upon either sudden or gradual changes to the material body, the tension of tangibility regarding the mind, and the concept of time transfigures into an attempt to shine a comforting light of acceptance upon the idea of dissolving into an after-life.

About the Artist

Chloe Clayborne (b. 2002) is an interdisciplinary artist who engages with painting and sculpture to create works which explore metaphysical ideas surrounding the body and consciousness; more specifically the illusionary, material boundaries of both mind and flesh in relation to material, memory, and change. She is currently residing in Charlottesville, Virginia as an Aunspaugh Fellow with the University of Virginia, where she recently received her BA in Studio Art.
