Through Housing2Home, New City Arts and The Haven partner to facilitate homemaking sessions with newly housed clients to create a more positive home environment that reflect each client’s needs. Each newly housed individual or family is given a budget to furnish and decorate their new space. While we focus a lot on making sure each person has the necessities—things like a bed, hygiene and cleaning items, and dishes and utensils—we also encourage them to use a portion of their budget on something to beautify their new home.

We believe that everyone is creative and that art is for all of us. We also believe in the power of choice. Housing2Home clients engage their creativity and decorate their spaces with an array of pieces reflecting their uniqueness and beauty.

To make the process of selecting art, particularly work made by local artists, more accessible and engaging for our Housing2Home clients, we are making a directory of local artists. This directory will allow staff to introduce clients to local artists and examples of the work you make.

We hope that this directory would help clients to discover artwork that they love and that it would create more connections with and artwork sales for Charlottesville artists.*

From individuals to families of five and young veterans to retired grandparents, Housing2Home program participants have a wide range of interests, experiences, needs, and styles. The following are examples of the types of work purchased since 2015:

  • Colorful, abstract work (geometric quilts, vibrant paintings)

  • Motivational posters

  • Portraits and family photos

  • Work related to hobbies and nostalgia—subjects often include favorite sports teams and landscapes

  • Functional pieces like cutting boards, custom furniture, pillows, and pottery

The directory is not limited to the kinds of work listed above.

Charlottesville-area artists who are interested in having their artwork featured and available for purchase or commission in this directory are invited to fill out this form and submit up to 3 images of artwork** to lindsey@newcityarts.org.

To be included in the first edition of the Housing2Home local art directory, please complete the form and submit images by June 15, 2020.

*We cannot guarantee that having your work featured in the directory will result in a Housing2Home purchase or commission. However, we hope that this catalogue will benefit all of the featured artists by introducing community members to your work.

**Example works do not necessarily need to be available for purchase.
