Call for Applications: “Fear No Evil” Juried Show

For our April exhibit, New City Arts invited curator Maurice Wallace to create a theme for a juried show. Maurice is a Rutgers University professor and former U.Va. faculty member. He has lectured and written widely on literature, African-American religion and visual culture. Bi-vocational, Maurice has also served as pastor of two North Carolina congregations. Fear No Evil has been conceived to explore the combination of these interests and experiences.

Today, courage is scarce and often confused with acts or expressions of brashness, arrogance, brazen self-righteousness, or worse, shameless aggression. In these polarized times, full of spectacles of terror, trauma, and hate-filled intimidation, it seems not only useful, but for many also life-saving, to recall and rehearse those things inspiring courage.

Charlottesville-area artists are invited to submit entries for a juried art exhibit anchored by Charlottesville artist Ashon Crawley’s I will fear no evil series (image above courtesy of the artist). Fear No Evil asks, What does the artist say to fear? What is the relation between courage and creativity? Emerging artists exploring courage and creativity over fear, shame, guilt, stigma, and despair are encouraged to apply.
