Alma Molina: Astronaut Mom Workshop Lab_001

Join May 2022 New City Arts Fellow, Alma Molina, for Astronaut Mom Workshop Lab_001 on Saturday, May 21 from 10AM-12PM. Gather with other moms and talk about real issues while working with paper, colored pencils, and old magazines. This free workshop is for moms, but you are welcome to attend with your children if needed. Registration is required.

How do moms sustain and nourish themselves? What is the cost of caregiving and how do mothers handle burn out? And what about physical changes and maternal guilt? How might a mother's lineage interact with these issues? What role might ritual play?

During this workshop, participants will talk and create together. Alma will lead participants in using free writing, sketching, and paper collage as a way to express personal and collective experiences. The work each participants made is welcome to be a part of the final exhibition.

TO REGISTER: Fill out this short form

MEET THE ARTIST

Alma Rayén Molina Carvajal (she/her) is an art mediator and cultural manager and the mother of Nahuel and Freya. Alma arrived in Charlottesville from Chile in early September 2021. With formal studies in Art Theory, Art History and Education, and a self-taught person, Alma has studied and developed art mediation practices that link artist, artworks, and cultural institution with communities and people.

Over the last few years, Alma has started to work in visual art pieces, boosted by feminist artists and feminist spaces, developing a “right here, right now” aesthetic. Using a non-academic language, she documents the routines and daily everyday life using the tools that has in hand: cell phone pictures, videos and audio recordings, scribbles and quick notes over notebooks, improv dances, and small performances. In the end, mixed up in digital collages and videos, edited in the same non-expert way.

During her fellowship in May 2022, Alma will conduct visual research about maternity by opening the gallery space to local Charlottesville mothers to support their needs (taking a nap, having a meeting, etc.).
