VMFA Field Trip with Daniel A. Siedell, Ph.D.

Join New City Arts and Art Historian, Daniel A. Siedell, Ph.D., for a visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

A candid photo of Daniel Siedell leading attendees of VMFA field trip through a gallery of mixed-media art. There is a black abstract sculpture in the background as well as a large multicored canvas hanging on a wall.

Siedell will provide helpful tips and questions for the viewer. Our trip will focus on The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States*, though you can sneak a peak at the two Rembrandt's currently on loan to the VMFA collection.

Though admission to the VMFA is free, this event is $15 per person to cover New City Arts costs (including gas, since we will be carpooling. This fee will be discounted for drivers). We will leave Charlottesville at 1 PM, aim to be at the VMFA from 2:15-4:45 PM, and return to Charlottesville by 6 PM.

*Beginning in 1962, Dorothy and Herbert Vogel began collecting contemporary works of art. A librarian and a postal worker, respectively, the New York City couple dedicated one of their salaries to purchasing art, and in a few decades they had amassed a collection encompassing thousands of works. In a unique partnership with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Vogels distributed 2,500 works from that collection, with fifty works going to one art museum in each state, including VMFA.
