Memory Mapping at the Garage

New City Arts presents Memory Maps of Charlottesville — a community mapping event — at The Garage on Friday, May 9 from 5 - 7 PM.

A photo of a completed sketch from a particplant from "Memory Maps of Charlottesville." It is a red-ink pen drawing of a single-room house on white paper.

Community mapping is an exercise that uses cartography as a platform for generating a dialogue about the spaces we inhabit, in this case, the city of Charlottesville. This event will focus on creating personal memory maps. Starting from scratch, participants will be encouraged to draw, list, discuss and map the spaces we all inhabit, traverse, and remember.

This is part of a larger project that Laura Snyder and Mara Sprafkin — New City Artists in Residence at The Haven — are working on to create many different perspectives on one shared space, the city of Charlottesville.

All of the maps will be on view later this summer in an exhibition opening at the WVTF space as part of First Fridays on June 6, 2014.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. The Garage is located on N. 1st St., across from Lee Park.
