New City Arts and Boar’s Head Resort
Boar’s Head Resort partnered with New City Arts to procure artwork from Charlottesville-area artists for their renovated lobby, restaurant, and spa from 2018-2021. New City Arts worked closely with Boar’s Head and UVA Foundation staff to select original work for their permanent collection by 24 artists, as well as commission a custom broadside by Rita Dove and Lana Lambert and a custom illustration by Grace Ho. The majority of this collection can be viewed online.
In 2022, Boar’s Head Resort renovated 125 hotel rooms and partnered with New City Arts to procure, commission, license, reproduce, and frame works at scale for these rooms.
Unique to this project was an opportunity to commission artists to create new works connected to the site. Isabella Whitfield created abstract, handmade paper from plant fibers collected along the trails on site. Laura Josephine Snyder collected soil as the foundation for paint in her works. Through this project, New City Arts worked with Boar’s Head to procure and reproduce 317 works for rooms and suites from 14 artists.
