What I find most exciting about my current practice is the way that active, slow looking informs how I move through the world. My work requires that I be particularly receptive/sensitive — always open and ready to receive and respond to any and everything I encounter. 'In Good Time' refers not to any anticipated moment or ending but instead to an implied attitude of patience. Patience is what enables me to see value in unlikely subjects. It is what helps me visually investigate, then articulate my perception of the essence of those subjects. My intention with these works is to encourage you to look more slowly and to be sensitive to the minutiae that people are often moving too fast to notice; because, that patience, that time and care and attention is perpetually rewarding.
About Tori Cherry
Tori Cherry is an artist based in Charlottesville, VA. She is a 2021-2022 Aunspaugh Fifth-Year Fellow at the University of Virginia (CLAS’21). Her paintings and drawings serve as sites for personal documentation, reflection, and connection. Through portraiture and still life inspired by her loved ones, her surroundings, and herself, she highlights the paradoxical uniqueness and universality of experience. More recently, her work explores the relationship between figure and space and how that interaction manifests in embodied idiosyncrasies.
