From October 4-25, 2019 New City Arts presents ECHOES, an exhibition of paintings by Liz Zhang.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In recent paintings of repeated family vignettes, I paint a similar scene over and over again but differently. Some scenes are borrowed from old family photographs, including photos taken before I was born or before I can remember. This process allows me to engage in a practice of re-visitation in a way that mirrors remembering and the invention inherent to it. Parallel scenes start to seem like preceding and future instants of each other. Intimate moments imply a story and invite the viewer to consider the moments before and after the presented scene. Figures repeat, echoing each other within paintings and between paintings. These repetitive figures suggest the uncanny, in the appearance of doppelgangers, alter egos, and split selves. The feeling of déjà vu, being lost, retracing steps, and involuntary repetition also lend themselves to the unsettling feeling in my work. The uncanny, insofar as it is the intersection of the familiar and the strange, surfaces at the most essential level in my work: the familiar— the family—becomes foreign.
