Annie’s fabric sculptures, or 3-D quilts, are rooted in the messy geometry of nature and rock formation. The work looks to crystal structure and how each unique crystal builds and pushes the form of the larger unit. Gravity, as in nature, also wields power over these forms.
Lily's large, in-the-round sculptures convey an innate desire to enter womb-like safe spaces. Seed pods, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nests, and geodes are her inspiration. When she looks to three dimensional objects for inspiration, she is directly engaging her obsession with nurturing and protective spaces that cannot be entered as a fully formed being.
MEET THE ARTISTS
Annie Dunckel (Annie Gunks) is a scientist and artist who works with fabric, photography, and printmaking. Annie grew up in San Antonio, TX in a house where her mother was constantly painting murals on the walls and encouraging exploration and creativity. Her work is driven by a strong sense of nature and her studies of geology and environmental science, but also a bit of fun and silliness.
Lily Erb is a locally-raised artist and nurturer. She spends her days welding in her studio in Free Union, taking care of two aging ponies, and providing childcare for several lovely families in the area.
