Throughout the weekend of April 18-22, Detroit-based artist Kate Daughdrill, (Garage co-founder and NCAI Forum presenter) will be creating a series of birdseed prints on the downtown mall and the surrounding streets. The prints will be created from birdseed that is laid onto the ground or other unexpected surfaces through a chipboard stencil. The three performative printing sessions will result in birdseed prints that are typically legible for 2-3 days. Over three consecutive days, the birdseed prints will assert a quiet but strong presence as they function in several different visual states simultaneously.
In order to share the process with others and to allow the project to be manifested throughout the entire month of the festival and hopefully into the future, on Sunday, April 22nd, from 7-9 pm at The Garage, Kate will lead a workshop at the Garage. During the workshop, participants will each create a unique stencil / matrix and then go into the city and print together. The discussion prior will focus on ritual, ephemerality, learning and unlearning, public intimacy, and alternative modes of communication within the city. The workshop concludes by going out into the city together in small groups to print our phrases. Participants will be encouraged to continue printing throughout the month and into the future.
