For our April exhibit, New City Arts invited curator Maurice Wallace to create a theme for a juried show. Maurice is a Rutgers University professor and former UVA faculty member. He has lectured and written widely on literature, African-American religion and visual culture. Bi-vocational, Maurice has also served as pastor of two North Carolina congregations. Fear No Evil has been conceived to explore the combination of these interests and experiences.
Today, courage is scarce and often confused with acts or expressions of brashness, arrogance, brazen self-righteousness, or worse, shameless aggression. In these polarized times, full of spectacles of terror, trauma, and hate-filled intimidation, it seems not only useful, but for many also life-saving, to recall and rehearse those things inspiring courage.
Charlottesville-area artists are invited to submit entries for a juried art exhibit anchored by Charlottesville artist Ashon Crawley’s I will fear no evil series (image above courtesy of the artist). Fear No Evil asks, What does the artist say to fear? What is the relation between courage and creativity? Emerging artists exploring courage and creativity over fear, shame, guilt, stigma, and despair are encouraged to apply.
Visual Artists in the Charlottesville area are encouraged to apply.
Drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, sculpture, film, music, and performance. Collaborative pieces welcome. One submission per artist. Work does not need to be new and can have been previously shown locally.
New City Arts does not exhibit explicit content. Offensive language, graphic nudity, and obscene violence are not permitted. If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to us! Contact us
To apply, fill out this form and send an image of the work you would like to submit to email@example.com. If accepted, work should be delivered the week of March 23-27. All work must be framed and/or ready to be hung on wire.
We hope all participating artists will attend the opening on Friday, April 3 at Welcome Gallery as part of April’s First Fridays Artwalk.
