From November 3-21, 2017, New City Arts presents Sound & Color, a series of paintings by Brittany Fan.
The same language is often used to describe the practice and experience of visual art and of music. We talk about the "rhythm" of lines or shapes in an image, or the way a composer "paints" an ethereal scene with its myriad of sounds and harmonies. These creative forms both have the power to takes us to transcendent places, activating and enhancing our imagination for something beyond our fundamental realities. The same can be said of other art forms, such as literature, film, dance, and theater. At times, creative acts interact, intersect, or are born out of one another. Novels have been inspired by paintings of old, dances choreographed to reflect an age old tale, and scores of music are composed to enhance and transform our experiences of drama and cinematography. In this series titled Sound & Color, Brittany explores the intersection of song and painting, utilizing the canvas to visually process her own personal experience of sounds, lyrics, and rhythms. In each created thing, there dwells the meaning given to it by its creator, but that meaning is also transformed by each person who encounters it with their own contextual experiences. Therefore, each of these paintings is a visual homage to the creative achievement of another, while also having its own set of definitions and capacities to be redefined further by the viewer.
MEET THE ARTIST
Brittany Fan is a recent graduate of the University of Virginia, where she studied Studio Art, Art History, and Arts Administration, in addition to completing a Masters in Education. Having a love of all things creative, her practices include painting, photography, illustration, and working as a designer at Journey Group in downtown Charlottesville. Although she loves creating simply for the act of making and expressing, she has a particular interest in how art can bridge gaps, enrich the human experience, bring goodness through beauty, and change the world in unconventional ways.
